One hundred years ago today Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen and his companions – Olav Bjaaland, Helmer Hanssen, Sverre Hassel and Oscar Wisting – reached the South Pole. As we embark on our own winter activities, remember:

Off-topic, but a novel you might enjoy reading sometime is Wildfire at Midnight, by Mary Stewart. Set in Scottish mountains, climbing is woven into the story line, and there’s even a discussion of Roald Amundsen by some of the characters. I think the genre would be considered ‘romantic suspense’, but it’s not all mushy. I enjoy her word pictures of the peaks & bogs.
